When Daniel hears of the decree, he does not panic or compromise. Instead, he continues his daily practice of praying to God, even knowing the consequences. This act of faith leads to his arrest and a sentence of death by lions.
Here we see Daniel’s katabasis: his literal descent into the lions’ den. It is a place of certain death, a dark and terrifying abyss where human power is of no use. Yet, Daniel does not descend alone. God’s presence is with him, and He sends an angel to shut the mouths of the lions. But unlike Daniel, Jesus’ katabasis would culminate not in miraculous rescue but in His death on the cross.
